NRMA Insurance’s carbon offset program – helping you take a step in the right direction
NRMA Insurance is committed to climate action and wants to make it easy for Australians to contribute too. That’s why for the last 12 months we’ve been running the NRMA Insurance carbon offset program.
As part of our Climate and Disaster Resilience Action Plan we’re working towards net zero emissions by 2050. To help get there, you can choose to calculate and pay to offset your estimated yearly driving emissions*. If many people make a small change, together we can help make a difference.
What is carbon offsetting?
We all create greenhouse gases every day, and these emissions contribute to climate change. However some actions, such as flying in a plane or driving a car create more of an impact than others. To balance out our carbon footprint, we can invest in carbon-absorbing, environment protecting and emission reducing projects. These are called carbon offset projects.
Climate change is a huge problem to tackle, but carbon offsetting helps individuals to take small steps that can help.
How can I get involved?
NRMA Insurance customers are invited to offset their estimated yearly driving carbon emissions* by making a small one-off payment each year. By telling us details about your vehicle and how much you drive each year, you can calculate the cost to offset your estimated annual driving emissions here*.
Our carbon offset program has been running for nearly 12 months and in that time we’ve offset over 1,000 tonnes of carbon.
How does the NRMA Insurance Carbon Offset Program work?
The Program is brought about by the support of Tasman Environmental Markets who are responsible for providing the calculation method used to calculate your vehicle’s estimated yearly driving emissions, and purchasing and retiring all offsets.
Your money goes to abatement projects that seek to reduce greenshouse gas emissions in the atmosphere.
All of our offsets are compliant under the Australian Government’s Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard. Our projects are all accredited under a strict third-party verification standard. These standards have a rigorous set of rules and requirements to ensure each project delivers real, permanent, and additional benefits. We want to do the right thing and support meaningful programs.
The three carbon offset programs we’re currently supporting are:
Bush regeneration. Working with farmers and landowners in Queensland and New South Wales, these projects regenerate the land and protect native vegetation to achieve key environmental and biodiversity benefits. By reducing and clearing, weeds are less likely to be spread and native habitats thrive, feeding and housing Australian wildlife. Read more.
Renewable energy. NRMA Insurance supports wind and solar energy projects in Asia to introduce emission-free energy to the grid. As well as producing zero emissions, they’re also helping to improve the availability and reliability of electricity in the regions. The projects employ local workers helping to boost local economies and village services. Read more.
Rainforest protection. Across South America, Oceania and Africa, rich forest habitats are protected through rainforest rescue projects. A value is put on retaining forests and supporting agroforestry, so that landowners can diversify their income. This both helps secure wildlife habitat and support local communities through sustainable agriculture. Our rainforest protection projects both capture carbon dioxide and prevent the release of millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. Read more.
Our partnering projects invest in carbon removal, avoidance, and reduction activities both locally and around the world.
Thank you to everyone who has already taken steps to offset their estimated driving emissions* over the last twelve months. We’re proud of how many of our customers have stepped up to help make a difference.
Climate change is a huge problem to tackle. Your emissions matter. So, let’s do something about it.
By making a payment to offset your car’s estimated yearly driving emissions* through our Carbon Offset Program your payment will be used to support abatement projects that seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Follow this link to find out how you can help.
Things you should know
The NRMA Insurance Carbon Offset Program is offered by Insurance Australia Limited (ABN 11 000 016 722), trading as NRMA Insurance (Program).
The Program is only available for individuals at this time. We strive to provide for as many cars as possible but not all cars are in our calculator. If your car is not listed, you can still offset carbon emissions equivalent to the average carbon emission for a car the same size as yours in Australia. For further details about the Program, visit here.
* The calculation method used to calculate your car’s yearly driving emissions is an estimate only and should not be relied upon as an accurate record of the actual emissions produced by your car in a 12 month period.
