How to prepare your home to avoid winter damage

Winter weather can be tough on your home. Fierce winds, sudden drops in temperature, and wet conditions can all cause damage if you’re not prepared. While you should always follow professional advice, and get any damage checked out by a professional if you’re unsure, there are things you can check around the house in the autumn months to get ahead of any potential problems. Here’s our list.

1. Roof and Gutters

Leaves, snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can all take a toll on your gutters, causing them to deteriorate or become blocked. If you have a damaged or blocked gutter, it can lead to water leaks and damage to your foundation. To help prevent this, be sure to clean your gutters regularly and check for any signs of damage.

You should also have a professional inspect your roof for any potential issues. If you notice any of the shingles or tiles are missing or damaged, be sure to have them repaired as soon as possible.

2. Heating system

Whatever heating system you have this winter, it’s a good idea to check that everything’s running smoothly before the cooler weather kicks in. Whether you have a central system or a room heating system, you will benefit from an inspection or even a service from a professional at the start of the cooler season. This inspection should also give you the opportunity to fix any minor issues before they become bigger, more expensive problems. You should also take  time to clear any obstructions from your vents or chimney.

3. Check your smoke alarm

Making sure your smoke alarm is working properly is important all year round, but the increased use of heaters during the cooler months poses a greater fire risk. Most smoke detectors have a test button for you to press and hear the alarm sound. If you find it’s not working even after you replace the battery it’s a good idea to replace the whole alarm.

4. Plumbing

Frozen pipes can be a major headache during the winter months. When temperatures drop below zero, your outdoor pipes can freeze. When they thaw, they can crack and burst, which can be a huge expense. Before the cold weather sets in, ask a professional to check your exposed pipe for any damage and get do any repairs or replacements if necessary.

You can also use insulating material to protect your pipes from the cold. Before you fit your pipes with any sort of insulation, make sure the pipes are clean and won’t leak so the insulation stays dry. If in doubt, always use the services of a professional tradesperson.

If you’re going to be away for a long period of time - not just during winter but any time of year - consider turning off your water supply to help prevent any potential damage from a burst or cracked pipe.

5. Landscaping

Winter weather can take a toll on your garden, and an unruly garden can take a toll on your home during wild weather. To protect your plants and shrubs, be sure to cover them with burlap or other protective material. You should also remove any dead or damaged branches from trees to prevent them from falling and causing damage during a winter storm. Additionally, make sure to clear your driveway and walkways of any debris or leaves to prevent slips and falls.

By taking the time to check these areas of your home, you can help protect your home from the harsh winter weather. With winter just around the corner, now is a great time to take care of any issues before they become a bigger problem.
